Can I use composite material for the top layer of a parking deck?
I’m looking to resurface my parking deck. I’ve been told of the benefits of composite decking (Trex, Weatherbest, etc.) but I don’t know if they are appropriate for a parking deck and the load of supporting a car. The joists are 24″ center to center. Thanks!
In response to some of the answers:
The support structure is massively strong and has some heavy duty steel braces and 5″ x 7″ joists. The home inspector actually marvelled at the strength of the parking deck as well as the other decks.
I have to ask, since no one else is….You have a parking deck with 24 OC? Your questions needs editing. If you are parking a car on a deck, with something not solid under it, and you have 24″ oc joists, you either have a go cart or some pretty strong supports. If you are talking about a structure adjacent to a parking spot (the latter being on solid ground), and you want composite rather than 5/4 wooden decking, then you probably will enjoy the composite, despite its increased costs. Last time I checked, 5/4 treated decking planks were about $5.89 for a ten foot length. Composites available at the big box stores were running about 2.3 times that per length. However, you get the strength of composite, weatherability, and no shrinkage or warping. Some composites can be “reversed” if they fade over time, you simply flip them to the underside and it is not faded.
Again, you say you are supporting the load of a car with 24″ oc joists. I have to say, you are either using some big bangers of joists and planking, or you live on the beach someplace where they do occasionally do this sort of thing. I guess I would not put a car over composite for decks, but maybe they make a really heavy duty composite plank that will withstand your weight load, if the your underpinnings are sturdy and not eroded.
Will be interested to see if someone else has some thoughts.

how much a square foot is trex decking?
im trying to find out how much to charge for a 90 square foot floor deck 5 quarter by 6. im going to need to know how much the deck material is inorder to know what to charge for the job. Iam just going over the existing flooring after i resecure it and then lay my decking right over the old one ;was thinking 10 per square foot labor and material i think the decking goes for like 5 per square foot?

Call Lowes or Home Depot – they sell it. They don’t sell it by the square foot. They sell it by the linear foot but you can calculate it. I think you are low but they will let you know.

PS: Considering what Doc said (I don’t think Doc realized you were quoting it with materials): I think that the Trex alone will cost you close to $10 sq.ft. and since you are including materials in the price you may very well do this job for nothing if you’re not careful. I’m not even going to comment on the merits of putting it over an existing deck. I will assume that is what the owner wants and leave it at that.

We are looking at the Trex brand. Very expensive but worth it if there is little to no maintenance. Anyone have any advice/experience?
Yes, lots of advice. Composite decking is definately worth it. There is little maintenance. You still need to clean it once a year, don’t let a salesman tell you otherwise, that is maintenance. Plus, if you go with wood, you will replace it in 7 years, unless you really maintain it and it sounds like you don’t want to do that. I am not a big fan of Trex though. There are many other products out there. I suggest Fiberon or Evergrain. These are both made with higher quality materials than Trex and cost about the same. Once you make that jump from wood to composite, you want high quality material. Trex has had some major problems recently with mold and I think there have been some lawsuits. You can find out more about that in their investor news. But as far as I know Fiberon and Evergrain have never had any major problems. Good luck and enjoy you composite deck.

I have just had a Trex deck installed, and my friends that installed it told me that Trex can scratch pretty easily. Has anyone had a problem with this? My patio chairs and table are metal: should I put some kind of plastic pads (like little round ones under each leg) underneath them? What about if I put flowerpots on the deck..should those have plastic pads underneath them too? Thank you!
