This is a pretty big undertaking. I would seriously consider a company called scribe (scribe.com) they specialize in connecting systems like this. You can buy their software and do it yourself, or have them do the whole thing. Your version of CRM has a lot do to with it … 1.0, 3.0 ??? If you have 1.0 and are trying to use the packaged integration, good luck. I didn’t like it at all, and have had MS ‘gold’ partners tell me to use Scribe.

Microsoft Dynamics GP, formerly known as Great Plains Dynamics is Dexterity application from the standpoint of GP user interface (fat client), DB structure (DEX_ROW_ID and other traces of Dex in SQL Server). ReportWriter is also Dexterity coded module, which perfectly integrates within Great Plains user interface and its security realm. In this small publication we would like to give you highlights on RW reports version upgrade from technical perspective:
- RW typical reports. Sales Order Processing Blank Invoice Form is one of the most popular. Here you typically need to place your graphical logo on the top of the report header. The same should be said about Purchase Order Processing PO form. Plus, it is often the case when you need to add new fields or take off existing fields from RM Aging Report, GL Trial Balance. In the past you would use RW for quick data extraction from Great Plains table, however recent versions: 10.0, 9.0, 8.0, 7.5 have pretty decent Smart List or Explorer, where you can export single table info into Excel a way quicker
- ReportWriter dictionary version update. If we are talking about main product Dynamics GP, then dictionary file is Reports.dic, where you find all your so-called modified reports. Microsoft Business Solutions should have special list of RW reports, that are not-upgradeable and you would need to rebuild them from scratch. In our experience all reports are upgradeable, and the problem often lays in so-called Calculated Fields – new version of Great Plains often comes with new versions of calculated fields (including names and functions, that they call retroactively), in this scenario we recommend to analyze old and new report and make changes accordingly (either by adding old calculated field into new version, or change report to use new calculated fields instead)
- Alternative to RW. Here you should understand that such reports as SOP Invoice have Great Plains interface, calling the invoice to be printed (this is where GP calls the report with Invoice Number parameter) – so, if you would like to create nicer version of Sales Invoice in Crystal Reports – you should be ready to call it in separate parameter entry screen of CR. FRx is the tool of choice for Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss, Statement of Cash Flow and consolidated versions of those. SSRS is also catching up if you would like reports to be deployed in web interface on MS SQL Server

Recently as of the time of this writing, Microsoft took yet another step in the direction of making it easier for business partners and clients to add customization to its BI suite of software. (BI stands for “business intelligence”.)
Microsoft has released its Dynamics CRM Analytics Foundation. This is a bundle of customizable documentation and source code, and it’s for free to all users of MS CRM software. Clients and business partners can build on the tools found in this bundle for the creation of customized BI applications, or simply use them as they are found.
Microsoft is just one of the sellers of CRM software that is now endorsing what it calls “BI for the masses”, which essentially comprises the implementation of real-time metrics, information, and data in a format that is usable by all staff members and not confined to upper management. Microsoft is hoping that by selling the software that enables this, it can increase its own sales volume of CRM software.
Microsoft’s Dynamics CRM software draws upon Microsoft’s data analysis and management software programs including its SharePoint Portal technologies, Visual Studio suite of developmental tools, Office Business Scorecard Manager, and its SQL Server relational database. Christian Pederson, the senior director for Microsoft’s Dynamics CRM development, says, “We’re bringing the entire BI strategy from Microsoft to life”. He expects Dynamics CRM to be an important proof in the pudding for that concept, as it merges the analytics capabilities and data mining capabilities of the software with the company’s SQL Server. Another piece of the Dynamics CRM suite that Microsoft will be releasing later on in this year at the time of this writing, according to Pederson, is going to be its PerformancePoint Server 2007.
PerfomancePoint Server 2007 has been undergoing Beta testing since November of 2006. It comprises a conglomeration of technologies that Microsoft acquired through the buying of ProClarity last year and its own proprietary BI technologies. PerfomancePoint functions as a way for users to put their data and business rules onto a central server to then be integrated with BI forecasting, planning, scorecarding, and analysing.
The latest step in Dynamics CRM can allow a company to study predictive analytics concerning client activities in order to cross-sell or upsell with more success. When a client contacts your company, your salesmen would be able to access the data in Dynamics CRM related to things beyond just that client, such as other clients’ buying habits, that put the salesman in a position to make informed and relevant recommendations for additional products.
