Black Hawk Down Deja Vu
Forget about America, China, Russia, and all of those powerful nation with large armies. Somalia a very poor ($600 per capital income) nation with less people than New York City is the focus of the world with their infamous PIRATES! The world is fixed on a small motorboat being overshadowed by a huge warship and helicopters that can’t do a damn thing: so much for power and might.
U.S. rules of engagement prevent the Americans using their vastly superior fighting power to engage the pirates if there is any danger to civilians.
Piracy along the anarchic and impoverished Somali coast, the longest in Africa, has risen in recent years. Somali pirates hold about a dozen ships with more than 200 crew members, according to the International Maritime Bureau, a piracy watchdog group based in Malaysia. The bureau lists 66 attacks since January, not including the Alabama. It seems that small is more powerful.
So, they’ve taken huge ships, yachts, and tugboats.
The pirates’ strategy is to link up with colleagues on other seized ships, who are holding Russian, German, Filipino and other hostages, and get Phillips to lawless Somalia, where they could hide the hostage and make it difficult to stage a rescue, the Somali speaking to the pirates said. That would give the pirates more leverage and a stronger negotiating position to discuss a ransom. Anchoring near shore also means they could get to land quickly if attacked.
Remember Black Hawk Down?
So, while American forces sit and wait, the chances of escalation increases. Other pirates are attempting to seize the opportunity, threaten other hostages, link up with the band of four, and otherwise thumb their noses at the mighty powers of the East and West. The U.N. is trying to figure out what to do (nothing will happen) and in America we’re going to convene a senatorial meeting to discuss the matter.
The silly get more ludicrous and it’s Black Hawk Down deja vu….all over again!
