Electric RC Helicopters have enjoyed a sudden rise in popularity due to recent significant improvements in the radio-control and electronics industry. As their components improve in quality while at the same time getting cheaper in price, many manufacturers launch beginner models labeled as RTF or “Ready to Fly”- but are they really?

In fact, the phrase “Ready to fly” was born in the days of more “traditional” RC aviation. What it actually meant, at least initially, was “required no assembly”. It didn’t mean that RTF kits didn’t require set-ups, tuning, or tinkering before it could take to the air.

Nowadays, however, new pilots just starting out with this hobby expect their new model that comes labeled as “flying right out of the box” to do just that. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.

Very often, beginner pilots realize that RTF helicopters are not so “ready to fly” when they learn that keeping them in the air is quite difficult, especially for four channel models. While there are co-axle models available which are relatively easier to handle, they too require hours of training.

Also, these helicopters with their rotor blades spinning at extremely fast speeds can cause serious injuries. Therefore, no one would want an out-of-control helicopter of any size in their vicinity. Many would soon conclude that even for these RTF fliers, the best approach is to first learn in a simulator. This fact alone means that even easiest to fly RTF helicopter requires practice, and often times, lots of it – upsetting the very concept of “flying right out of the box”.

RTF Helicopters doesn’t always come with everything you need to fly as most people would think either. The most common missing component is the battery back for the radio controller – they usually come with a battery rack that requires 4 to 8 AA alkaline batteries. More serious fliers usually end up buying a rechargeable pack not long after their initial purchase of the kit.

Another popular missing component is a battery charger. These RTF kit usually comes with very rudimentary adaptor that you can plug right into your battery pack, which by all accounts, doesn’t constitute a “charger”. They don’t even cut the electrical flow when the battery is full (which, by the way, may lead to over charging and ultimately, the explosion of the battery pack). In fact, many find it ironic that these RTF kits include a battery pack but no charger.

Not until very recently has this issue been addressed and few very new models (such as the LAMA IV by Esky) come complete with an adequate charger.

Nevertheless, there are some helicopters that are truly “ready to fly” right out of the box. These are the 2-channel models such as famous Picoo Z. Not only are they ready to fly, they are palm-size, allowing for them to be flown just about anywhere that is windless. These little fliers are also pretty durable, enabling them to withstand crashes after crashes. However, they are much less maneuverable than four-channel models.

All in all, there are many kinds of RTF kits and some are more “ready to fly” than others.

Esky Honey Bee King 2 6CH CCPM Electric RC Helicopter RTF Brand New!!!
RTF HoneyBee KING-II(white) (include: Kit+Motor, 6CH TX, Receiver, Servo*4, ESC, Gyro, Charger, Battery , AC/DC adapter) 72mhz, mode 2 USA adaptor

CCPM is the most precise way to control a collective pitch helicopter. 23-1/2 main rotor diameter, 20-1/2 overall length, 14.2 oz flying weight. Honey Bee Kings small size and light weight coupled with collective pitch and a shaft driven tail offer stability and forgiveness with plenty of performance features as your piloting skills grow. All of the major components are preassembled and ready for radio equipment installation. The 120-degree CCPM head design uses 3 servos to control the collective pitch and the cyclic controls. The recommended EKA21010 radio system is matched and set up for Honey Bee Kings CCPM mechanics, making installation and setup a snap. Once you master hovering and slow circuits in Normal mode, switch into Idle Up 1 mode and Honey Bee Kings high-performance motor has plenty of power for sport flying and inverted flight. Tail drive gears are conical or cone?shaped for reliable, wear-free operation. The tailboom is machined for perfect 90-degree alignment of the tail rotor to the main rotor without adjustments. All spare parts are available from us. ....read more

Don’t bother with Brian C’s answer for he doesn’t seem too knowledgeable on the subject of “RC Flight.”

The reason an coaxial helicopter could not fly outdoors is because the top propeller is not being controlled by anything but its centripetal force. The blade would only act upon what the bottom propeller does. If it goes forward, the top blade will only tilt a little causing it to center itself. This causing it to be easy to hover. When wind hits it, it knocks the top propellers into the direction of the wind, sometimes even confusing the propeller pushing it into multiple directions, or the direction of the wind.

Anyways, back to your question…
Collective Pitch helicopters aren’t easy to learn. They are all equally the same to learn on. Collective Pitch and Fixed Pitched aren’t too different. Pitch describes the Blades.Collective Pitch blades tilt and collect wind, giving the helicopter lift. Fixed pitched helicopters have blades already pitched, so they do not tilt. Fixed Pitched blades are like the coaxial helicopter you already have. Those are Fixed Pitched Blades.

Coaxial helicopters would be good outdoors if there is absolutely no wind. Collective Pitched (CP) or Fixed Pitched (FP) helicopters will be even better, but also still limited. You can’t have a lot of wind. like 0-15 MPH is ok.

The only thing more difficult on the CP helicopter or FP helicopter without coaxial blades are the hovering of the helicopter. Because there is not second propeller to center your helicopter, you have to do that yourself. If you mastered that, and know how to fly a Coaxial helicopter, you could do pretty much anything from fast forward flights, to inverted flights even! The costs will be a little more than the Coaxial helicopters. So I would suggest you flying the CP or FP helicopter in a place without winds first, so you get an idea of how the helicopter handles.

All CP helicopters are the same. The bigger, the easier to fly when its more windy, but not necessarily. If you want a kit under $160, there are a lot out there.

The Heli Max Axe CP is a nice helicopter for $180 USD. I would definitely suggest that.

There are others, but I wouldnt suggest those Walkera’s and all those since those have a high reputation of cheap materials.

Anyways, if you need more help, just message me.
If you find a RC helicopter and unsure if its good, message me too.

May your next step up in RC Flight experience not be your last.
