Immediate Relief From Migraines – A Quick Relief With Home Therapies
Migraineurs usually get migraine attacks that last a few days. Migraine usually impairs the migraineur’s normal brain functioning and abilities in addition to the pain associated with it. You may get annoyed by the migraine pain, and you may be desperate to think of anything to relieve your pain. Here are some tips that help relieve your pain:
Drink plenty of water and breathe deeply: Dehydration in a hot sunny day may make you vulnerable to migraines. Normal people feel discomfort with dehydration, but migraineurs may get a migraine attack. Also check for your breathing. If it is slow and shallow, it is contributing to your migraine. Take a few minutes to relax yourself and breathe deeply. Slowly breathe in up to your maximum lung capacity and hold your breath for about 5 seconds. Slowly breathe out air until you almost empty your lungs and hold your breath for about 5 seconds. Do it slowly such that you take around ten seconds for breathing in and ten seconds for breathing out.
Take a triptan: Triptans work as an immediate migraine abortive for most people. You have to take the pill and relax for it to work effectively. They work by constricting blood vessels, reducing nerve cell inflammation. Examples of Triptans include Imitrex, Maxalt, Amerge, Zomig, Axert, Frova, and relpax. Try Treximet, which is a new drug that combines the Triptan Imitrex (sumatriptan) and Alieve (naproxen sodium). But triptans are not recommended for people with risk of stroke or heart attack.
Pain-Relievers: If Triptans don’t work with you then try Tylenol, Advil, Ibuprofen, or any drug that combines the basic analgesics like Excedrine migraine (acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine). You may take Aspirin, but be aware that it may cause gastrointestinal bleedings. You may also consider consuming caffeine in little amounts. If you drink a small bottle of coke over a period of a few hours, you get little amounts of caffeine that helps you fight against the pain. This may not work with everybody since some people are sensitive to caffeine. One last word about pain killers, limit your intake of pain-relievers since they may cause you rebound headaches.
Lie down in a quiet and dark room: Lying down in a quiet dark room is the best thing to do once you feel a migraine attack. Stay calm and still until you feel better. You may even close your ears with your hands or using earplugs to feel better. Don’t think about anything and try to empty you mind as much as possible.
Massage your head: massage your face, forehead, neck, and shoulders. At the rear bottom of your scalp (the occipital area), press on the cavity-like points between the ears and the neck with your thumbs. Press your thumbs toward each other and up for a minute or two then repeat a few times. This procedure releases endorphins that are the body’s own pain killers. If you feel exhausted, you may even get someone like a family member to do the massage for you.
Heat – cold therapy: Sometimes you feel like you got a migraine attack because of the cold weather, and some other times you feel like you got it because of the hot weather. So, you have to judge whether you need a heat or cold therapy. If you feel like your head is inflamed or irritated, you have to use an ice pack. Do not put ice directly on your head or skin, as this may hurt your skin cells or bones. Instead, use a rubber-made medical ice pack that you may get from the pharmacy. Apply to your head and neck to soothe away the pain. On the other hand, you may feel that you need a steam therapy or hot shower. If you are exhausted by migraine and feel you cannot take a shower, boil water in a container then put some towel on top of your head. Get your face to a comfortable distance from the container and inhale the hot air. Once you are done, try massaging your head to relax and calm down the pain more.

what are the effects of toxic build up of metabolites due to demerol usage for pain management?
I take demerol for pain management of my daily migraines..i only use it when i have to because i have a 4 year old and i don’t want to be a vegetable…unfortunately pushing past the pain generally ends up in severe pain after a day or so..and i have to take it…hydrocodone does not help morphine does but i don’t think they give perscriptions for that. and i am worried since i was told by the hospital on my last er visit that they are phasing demerol out due to toxic build up. and if it is dangerous i need to ask what other medications are available to knock out the pain since all the non narcotics so far have had no effect…treximet sometimes but is also bad for your kidneys and liver with extended use…anyway does anyone know about the effects of this toxic build up of metabolites?
Personally I thought Demerol didn’t have anything in it such as acetaminophen, etc. but maybe it does. I live with severe chronic pain because of my spine (I’m disabled) and have to take Oxycontin twice a day. It’s a time released narcotic that lasts (or is supposed to anyway but doesn’t) 12 hours. Oxy has nothing else in it except for the synthetic opiate. Oxy is used for chronic pain and cancer and is for long term use. I have to have something pure such as this so I do not get a toxic buildup of OTC meds in my liver and kidneys that other med’s like Hydrocodone and Vicodone have in them. I also need the much stronger narcotic or I couldn’t survive this pain. Other narcotics that are pure are Dilaudid, Morphine and Fentynal. I also suffer from Migraines and the drugs made for that (prescription) do not work for me. When I get one I have to hide in a darkened and silent room with a pain med and a Valium in me until it goes away. Migraines are a terrible thing to have. Good luck in your quest to find what is right for you.
