A few quick deck questions:?
1) We’re a family with a toddler and one on the way. We’re rebuilding our deck, so we’re going to be able to do it our way by putting up rails, etc. The question is this:Pressure-treated wood is $22 while the Trex (Lowe’s brand) is $26. My husband wants to go with the cheaper wood, but I’m more inclined to pay a little extra to avoid splinters. Any thoughts? We can afford either.
2) We’re looking to build a one-step stair going from the deck to our patio. My husband wants to keep it at a standard 3 feet, but I’m contemplating carrying 2 small children up and down those stairs while opening a gate at the top and realizing that maybe 3 feet isn’t large enough. We have 14 feet to deal with, and personally I think it may even look better with it being 4 feet. Thoughts?
Pressure treated wood is done with chemicals….some communities have outlawed pressure treated playground equipment.Toddlers crawl & sit on decks. Also pressure treated wood DOES require maintenance. After it weathers some you must keep it water proof or it will develop weather checks , then cracks, then rot,
especially if you get freezing weather. The pressure treat only penetrates so far. Exposed cuts & edges of boards not coated with stain/water proofing will rot first.
The exta $$ is worth it for the plastic product & safer for children….No splinters or chemicals. go 4 feet wide
