Symantec Ghost 2.5 Manual
License Error in Windows XP
In order to reduce, if not completely eliminate, software piracy and avail its customers quality products, Microsoft uses product activation for its major products including Windows operating system. But sometimes Windows based systems (specifically Windows XP) may not start with an error about license check, followed by an error code:
“A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error code: 0xnnnnnnnn”
There are no particular conventions about the error code. It may vary according to the root cause of problem. If the error code generated is ‘0x800703e7’ then it is file system corruption, preventing Windows to check the license. In such cases, we need to use chkdsk. However if chkdsk fails with no valid backup, Data Recovery applications will be required. Other than this, probable error codes with their reasons are as:
· 0×80004005: This error code generates if some third party backup tool or antivirus application has modified the Windows installation in a way that file required by WPA (Windows Product Activation) has damaged or deleted. This file may also get damaged due to manual changes. Thus we can either repair Windows installation through Recovery Console or perform in-place upgrade repair.
· 0x8009001d: Modifications in system drive letter assignment or boot drive letter assignment causes this error, which is possible if MountedDevices registry value has been changed. Thus we need to remove all contents of MountedDevices registry key value.
· 0×80090006: Drive letter change generates this error. Thus if Ghost from Symantec is in use, we can specify –FDSZ switch and then rebuild Ghost image. But if Drive Image Pro is in use, we need to upgrade it to Deploy Center version 5.0 from Power Quest.
· 0×80070002: Change in system drive letter or default security provider cause this issue. So we need to reset them by performing corresponding registry editing.
· 0x800705aa, 0x8007007e or 0×80004005: These errors generate because of missing or corrupt Dpcdll.dll file. So we need to replace it of correct version by copying it from new installed system.
· 0x8007007f or 0x8007007e: This occurs after upgrade through service pack due to corrupt, missing or mismatched file. Thus service pack is needed to be reinstalled.
· 0x800705aa, 0×80070002, 0×80004005, 0x800405aa or 0×80090019: This occurs due to third party application errors. So we need to remove such programs and delete the corresponding registry entries.
As mentioned earlier in error code 0x800703e7, file system corruption is the issue. So we need to use chkdsk to repair. In case it fails, we can recreate the file system by backing up the data and then formatting the drive. Backup must be complete and checked for status. However if backup fails to give required results, we can use Data Recovery Software to extract lost data.
