symantec endpoint protection trouble- please help!?

i have a dell laptop running windows xp with symantec endpoint protection. today i noticed that s.e.m. says, “antivirus and antispyware protection definitions are out of date.” but when i click “fix”, a pop-up window appears that says, “s.e.m. has requested new definitions from the management server. this problem will disappear after the server responds and the update is complete.” but nothing ever happens. does anyone know what i should do?

other viruses or even just too many temp files can cause this, try downloading ccleaner and give ur pc a tune up with it then download malwarebytes and scan with that
make sure you are connected to the internet while its updateing and your firewall isnt blocking it aswell :O)
