Wow! I must say I was very surprised by this title.
This is probably the most realistic and most fun racing game I’ve ever played.
Just because you are now required to remain on the road does not mean that driving experience is ruined. Actually, I think the realism of the game contributes to the problem and how much fun.
We recommend that you use the steering force feedback wheel and use the whole hand (carriage without ABS, TCS did not, etc..) It makes the game much more fun.
And this is not one of those games where as progress, no matter how fast you were going to other cars with the same specifications, it will suddenly zoom up to you (this is a common trick racing game designers put in some titles is sufficient to increase the difficulty of games).
The difficulty of this game is in control of the vehicle and track surfing.

I used to have a racing game that enjoyed playing when I had a PS1. Boy, does this game ever blow that one away! In fact, I’ve never played a racing game that was more fun than this one.
On this game you can buy & trade cars, change the paint job and customize them visually. The more you win, the better cars you’re able to buy and the more upgrades you’re able to do. I must concede that I’m partial to a souped-up Lamborgini that I picked up. I can dominate a lot of racetracks driving it! You can also buy more than one car > you have maxed out your upgrades.
The controls are similar to GTA, which is a good thing as the controls are fairly logical. One nice thing is that you don’t have any annoying “checkpoints” of earlier racing games.
The game does a great job of providing variety in races. You can race “manufacturers challenge” where every driver gets the exact same car (that way nobody has an advantage w/their vehicle). You can do head-to-head challenges between two different cars. There are also lap eliminator & time eliminator races that are thrown in as well.
Almost all of the major car manufacturers are on the game; Nissan, Toyota, Aston Martin, Chervolet, Ford, Lamborgini, Audi, Mercedes, etc. The only major brand that is omitted is Ferrari. That’s too bad as I’m a huge fan of Ferrari! Ostensibly, the licensing didn’t work out as I can’t see the makers of the game simply forgetting about such a major manufacturer of exotic automobiles.
If you like racing games, then more than likely you will like this one. Sure, the laws of physics are toned down in the game, but to have more realistic physics would be to degrade the playability of the game. This is at once one of the most frustrating games I’ve ever played, and at the same time it’s one of the funnest games I’ve ever played. You can drive with the precision of Mario Andretti, or you can be so aggressive that you make NASCAR drivers look like downright courteous operators. In short, it’s everything a racing game should be!

Best… Game… Ever!
I know it sits in between a sim and an arcade racer, and for me it is the perfect mix. I also own just about every racing game from every system and this is hands down not just my favorite racing game, but my favorite game. I don’t use my Logitech wheel with this on PS3 because I love how the car controls with the game pad. I do like to use the MS Wheel on the 360 version. I don’t understand other reviews stating the graphics are mediocre. In HD this game is gorgeous. The colors don’t “pop” like they do in Forza 3 (Forza is “hyper” colorful, to the point almost too much), but Shift is crisp, colorful, fast and just plain fun! The sense of speed is incredible. I own it for both PS3 & 360 and it’s the game I reach for 1st and will play for a long time to come. I love the direction the NFS series has taken with this game & I hope they make many more.

The realism in this game is so fantastic. I bought this game just because I am such a car guy but I thoroughly enjoy this and tempted now to get the wheel and more of a gaming setup to make it more like a simulator at home.

A Lot of Fun and a Blast with a Wheel
After reading the reviews on Amazon I wasn’t sure if this game was going to meet my expectations. With comments on compatibility with the Logitech wheel (I have a G27) and “launching” issues, I was willing to wait for Gran Turismo 5, until they pushed the release of that back to April 2010. I’m glad I didn’t wait because this is the best racing game I’ve played, whether SIM or arcade. It’s just plain fun, and what else is a video game supposed to be? The inside dashboards are very accurate, and feedback through the wheel is amazing. This may not be the best SIM game on the market, but it keeps me glued to the TV for hours at a time as I try to improve my precision or aggressive driving skills through the game. I especially enjoy the invitational events where different “tiers” of cars are available to race, rather than being stuck with the cars that you’ve purchased. This variety adds interest to the game and lets you drive the car that suits your talent and mood. Why pay $25 for Prologue when you can tune up for the next 4 months with this?
