Dynamic stretches are excellent for warming up, but serve little use in promoting flexibility. Static stretches would be the way to go. Hold the stretch for between 20 and 30s. Holding the stretch more than 30s won’t make a very big difference, but if you have a few minutes for stretching, you can use sets, alternating between legs for example for 3 sets of 30s each.
If you want an even more effective method of stretching, check out PNF stretching. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) works as follows: hold the selected stretch for about 10-15s. Contract the muscle being stretched for 5-10s while keeping the limb in the same position (in a hamstring stretch, your leg would still be straight, but you should press your heel down into the ground), then stretch even further. You’ll notice that your flexibility will immediately increase. Just make sure to warm up first though by doing a type of cardio for about 5min until you start to lightly perspire.
Be careful of ballistic stretching. It is the type of stretching that causes the most soft tissue injuries, specifically muscle strains. Ballistic stretching is when you hold a static stretch and the start “bouncing.” As you can imagine, it’s not the safest method.
All types of flexibility training should be after your workout, unless you set out a workout especially for flexibility of course. The reason for this is that static stretches before exercise don’t help at preventing injuries, the opposite is actually true. If you have a flexibility only session, at least warm up, otherwise your chances of injuring the targeted muscle will increase.
