Network did not assign a network address to the computer?
I have got this problem here that kept me crippled for sometime. This is what i face:
There is a wireless router, Linksys Wireless model WAG54G. And my laptop is using Intel Pro Wireless 2200BG. There is only WEP security on the router, no mac address filter.
When i connect to with the right WEP key, i get this error:
This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.
I’m running on dynamic IP with DHCP enabled.
Whenever i connect, it wil be successful but i will be assigned an odd IP starting with 169. When i look at the details, there are no default gateway or DNS information. All i see is the odd IP and the subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. I simply cannot get connected to the internet at all although i am somehow or rather connected to the router.
If i manually key in the IP address and stuff, i do get connected to the router but i simply cant get access to the internet at all.
I can connect to internet using lan cable though.
You should start over. The 169.X.X.X address is a default address programmed in the computer. Basically it means what you’ve already discovered, You’re not getting an IP address.
Do away with the WEP authentication and set the system to “open” and try again to make sure there isn’t another problem. Then carefully compare your setting to make sure the computer and router are matched. I’ve used WPA(PSK) with a lot of success. WEP has given me issues in the past.
One thing you can try is to leave the system open and then limit the connectivity by MAC address. This will only allow specific computers that you manually enter into the list. The MAC address can usually be found on the network card and the router will also display it in the connected clients list. Its a hexidecimal number that looks like this:
02:32:ab:cd:4f:3e
Add the MAC address for your computer to the “allowed” list
This is easy to do and also works good with older computers such as Windows 98 that don’t have good encryption.
On another note. It will annoy poeple that try to connect to your system because their computer will show that its connected but they won’t be able to do anything.
