Warehouse Management System as Extension to Microsoft Dynamics GP

As mid-market ERP, Accounting and MRP platform, Microsoft Dynamics GP or as it was previously known – Great Plains Dynamics, has robust software development and integration tools.  It is important to mention Microsoft Dexterity, eConnect, integration Manager and openness to SQL querying directly in GP database.  Programming methods allow you either integrate external standalone WMS or SCM application or simply extend Dynamics GP windows and tables for Barcode scanning.  We favor the second approach – add-ons to existing Dynamics GP distribution modules: Inventory Control, Sales Order Processing, Purchase Order Processing, plus in some cases – Bill Of Materials and even Manufacturing Suite.  This is introduction level paper, so feel free to glance at it and make your homework for the next steps in WMS selection:

1. External WMS versus native logic extensions.  External Warehouse Management System typically is more powerful in its functionality and it has connectors to multiple Corporate ERP applications (in the case of Dynamics GP, brand name WMS might have integration packages to Dynamics AX – Axapta, Dynamics NAV – Navision as well).  There are few topics to speculate about – if you already own Great Plains user licenses and modules, such as SOP, POP, Inventory – chances are high that you will have to pay second time for the WMS functionality, already available in those modules.  The second thing to review is the need to do separate implementation phase for WMS integration to Dynamics GP modules with testing and pilot month (or maybe couple of weeks in pilot, however we recommend you to be conservative – it is common when your External WMS requires integration alteration and goes into limbo and over budget).  In WMS extensions – you should expect less functionality in add-on itself, however it deploys functionality in Inventory Control, SOP, POP modules – and you of course do not expect integration phase

2. WMS typical functionality and how it is deployed in Microsoft Dynamics GP.  Here you are looking at Sales Order Fulfillment on the Warehouse floor (via Barcode scanning), Inventory Restocking, Stock Count and Transfers between the warehouses.  These functionalities are naturally implemented in GP SOP Sales Order manual allocation (via barcode scanning), POP Purchase Receipt (the same way – barcoding) and in Inventory Transaction, Transfer or Physical Count.  You should also expect nice Dexterity designed and programmed Screens for WMS settings – which are seamlessly integrated into Dynamics GP user security model and look like native GP windows

3. Going beyond WMS.  Here you might be looking at Supply Chain Management advanced topics, such as Consignment, EDI, Merchandise Delivery Route optimization (preferred delivery dates and hours).  Also, we recommend you to consider eCommerce directions and options.  If you already have in-house developed eCommerce B2B or B2C website with popular Shopping Cart platforms, such as Magento or ASP .Net Storefront and you are Dynamics GP ERP base – it is also a good idea to have your Barcode based WMS, Manufacturing and SCM to be integrated with your e-commerce shopping cart

4. Retail and Point of Sales (POS) operations.  There is direct integration between Dynamics GP and Microsoft RMS, sending daily sales transactions from Headquarters or Store Operations to GP SOP or RM Invoice, Return/Credit Memo.  Plus, we discovered that Great Plains customers like the idea to control merchandise replenishment in GP and even print Item Barcode Labels in Crystal Reports, SSRS or in Great Plains Report Writer
