Is it possible to have your own DNS or URL to your server for web sites?
Ive been looking into running my own server, I havent got it working on my home network yet but ive been reading that to publish your web sites from your own server, you have to have to register a URL through a DNS service which basically just references a name to your static IP of your server to direct people to your web site.
Well I was wandering if there were a way to have your own DNS service running on your server that can allow people to search for your web site or server through search engines or connect to your server/web site with the URL of which maybe a program can monitor your dynamic IP and have it associated to your static URL constantly. I cant see why something similar to this cant be possible but maybe someone can enlighten me, thanks.
You’re not really asking the right question – but I understand what you’re looking for. You don’t want to run your own DNS server. You want a service to host dynamic DNS for your home IP, thus assigning it a permanent name.
Yes, there are such services – check out www.dyndns.com. You can create a free account and download a piece of software for your computer. By running that software, you’re advertising your current IP address to dyndns.com. They are then taking that information and publishing a DNS entry associating it with a host name of your choosing.
This is great for a small scale website that you share with your friends. However, if you want something larger that gets a lot of traffic, it is best to put it on a server at your ISP or a web hosting company. Most home Internet connections have a lot of bandwidth for downloading but very little for uploading.
