    SYMA 3 CHANNEL MINI HELICOPTER
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bought nine SYMA 3 Channel S012 Mini AH-64 RC Helicopters from Amazon.Com for 9 yr old nephew, three nieces, 8 yrs, 9yrs and 11 yrs, and 32yr old son (so the kids would go home with a helicopter that worked when they left). These helicopters are rugged!

They were also the star present from Santa. The four youngsters learned to fly them up, down, forward and back, hovering and diving, with the only grumble that they had to wait while they recharged. 9 yr old nephew took the rockets attached to the sides off as he found them too cumbersome and had it diving all over the place, coming round a corner to attack. My niece had it flying around evading a rolled up napkin nephew was using to attempt to bring it down. Helicopter dropped numerous times but they all went home in one piece. These little helicopters are solid. I know, I’ve bought them each Christmas for the past three years and had these kids crying when they left to go home with broken planes. Not this Christmas though.

So I gave the remaining four to my sister, sister-in-laws, and daughter’s boy friend who weren’t as tough on them as the kids but who had just as great a time with them.

The instructions, which are poorly translated from Chinese, do not in some cases appear to apply to this product. For example, charging time is supposed to be 20-30 minutes. The instructions say, “The LED will light up when charging, if completed the LED will turn off.” After as much as two hours of charging the LED does not turn off. There comes a point where it changes from white to red. The instructions do not say what that means.

The instructions also say, “when the controller is in electrification the controller LED turns light, when in charging the controller is twinkling.” By that I assume that it means the multi-color LEDs take turns lighting up in fast succession. Mine didn’t do that.

Regardless of how long I charge the battery in the helicopter the rotors will not rotate fast enough to lift it more than an inch off the ground. It does not hover. As soon as it becomes airborne it moves forward or, sometimes, sideways. It has never flown long enough for me to be able to test the flight controls although the trim controls seem to function per the instructions

Several times the throttle stuck and the motor continued to run until I shut the controller off.

My experience with this product has been frustrating and very disappointing and I could not recommend it to anyone. I suspect that the unit may be defective in some way or ways. But the instructions are so poorly written that I have no way to be certain.

R/C chopper is for practicing for a better toy

Bought three of these for Christmas. One for an adult, one for a boy age 8 and one for a boy age 10. All three could learn how to fly a bit, though it takes practices. 30 minute charge lasts less than 5 minutes. Eats through batteries pretty quickly so worth investing in rechargeables. Little pieces of the helicopter break off pretty easily, though it does not affect flight. (i.e. part of a tail wing). One of the three just stopped working for an unknown reason. Can’t get enough lift to get off the ground. These are cheap, so worth buying to test out on a kid to practice and see if they like it and take care of it. Probably better to invest in a little higher quality if you want it to last. Eight and 10 year old boys go through toys like this pretty quickly in rough and tumble play. One problem with this toy is that it says “3-channel” but they shipped three helicopters all on the same channel, which means only one person at a time can fly, and creates little conflicts as one kid messes with his controller as the other one is trying to play with his during his turn.

    Not quite for kids?

Ordered on a Friday, received on Thursday. Toy has a bit of a learning curve — could not imagine giving to a kid under 11 or 12, as its fragile body probably wouldn’t last more than a couple flights (you run into a lot of walls and land pretty roughly your first couple tries). A blast once you get the hang of it, though. 15-20 minutes’ charge gets you 5-6 minutes’ flight, and three channels means you get up/down, left/right rotation, and forward/backward. Instruction manual is laughably translated to English, but intelligible. Seems to be a good ice-breaker for a serious RC copter.
