Home Solar Power Systems: How Many Kilowatts (kws) are Created?
The first thing you might ask – what is solar radiation and how does it related to solar generated electricity? That is a good question and a topic discussed in our next article in our series dedicated to home solar power. This article, on the other hand, explains how kilowatts are calculated based upon the energy output of your solar array. We will also highlight the difference between solar cells connected in parallel versus in series.
The average American home uses about 25 kWh of electricity per day. The following example illustrates how to calculate the power produced by a residential solar energy system. Looking over a solar radiation grid, we can determine that a residence gets five daylight hours of solar radiation in one day which is then averaged out over the entire year.
Solar radiation maps are highlighted on may websites throughout the Internet. You can do a quick search for “solar radiation” to find one. In any area across the entire United States, they detail out the amount of sunshine hitting a given location based upon the time of year and its address.
Calculating the power from a solar energy system
Divide the average kWh per day by the average sun hours per day. For this example, we take 25 kWh divided by 5 hours of sun per day = 5 kW system This 5 kW system will generate 25 kWhs under optimal conditions in direct sunlight for 5 hours, or 25 kWh on an average day with some at peak production and most of the sunlight at less than optimal angles.

Energy as it Pertains to Solar Modules
Individual solar modules that are measured in watts have a particular voltage (around 40 volts) and a particular amperage (around 5 amps). A solar module with 40 volts and 5 amps is called a 200-watt module, which means that it has the potential to produce 200 watts of electricity when in direct sunlight, away from trees or shading, and clear of snow or debris. Since most electrical components around your house are only rated for 600 volts DC, it is rare to see a solar array with a string larger the 15 solar modules. On the other hand, since inverters need a minimum voltage or pressure to turn them on, you will seldom have a solar array with a string solar modules with a size smaller then 6.
Electrical components, like solar cells, panel modules or batteries, can be connected in either series or parallel. This makes a big difference in the total quantities of energy produced from the solar energy system, as well as the stability of the technology over time. Each solar module or component has a positive and a negative pole. In essence, this is the same way batteries have their negative and positive poles arranged. Take a look at how you but batteries in a flashlight. Same idea here. The manner in which these poles are connected makes a big difference. Connect Solar Panels in Series
When you connect residential solar energy systems in series, you connect the positive (+) pole on one component to the negative (-) pole on the next. When modules are connected in series, the voltages are added. Adding voltage together in this fashion creates a long chain of solar modules all working together, depending upon each other, and creating a flow of current that increases along the length of the system.
These modules in series are called Strings. The average string is 8-12 modules so the voltage would be 320 – 480. Unfortunately, we encounter some negative aspects of of this type of construction.
Connecting Solar Panels in Parallel
When you connect solar panels or components in parallel, you connect the panels so current can travel to your inverter and to your house via multiple paths. Unlike adding solar modules in series which increases the volume of current as it goes, the solar panels connected in parallel has the effective of leaving the current or volume of electricity passing through the system the same.
Solar panels or strings of solar arrays tied together in parallel are called parallel systems. Their amps are combined together but the total voltage remains the same. Adding amps is like increasing the volume, the pressure stays the same but the volume goes up. Inverters can only handle so much volume so you will seldom see more than 1 to 3 strings in parallel; positive ends to positive ends with negative ends to negative ends.
One of the advantages of parallel connection is that electricity continues to flow, even though one of the components (or strings) is damaged. If a system is entirely in series, one damaged component stops the entire system. You may remember the ever-frustrating Christmas lights that were connected in series. Often difficult to trouble shoot, strings of lights connected in series are hard to fix when one bulb blew out. Now, the modern Christmas lights are connected in parallel. You are able to determine this easily. There are usually two different wires coming in and out of each bulb. You can feel this via their less frustrating maintenance and operation.

Of Auto Dealers and Icebergs
There’re Not Enough Life Boats! Few phrases are as closely linked to tragedy as this one. For the remaining 1500 men, women and children left on the Titanic with nowhere to go but the frigid waters of the North Atlantic on that historic night in 1912, the grim realization of their fate must have been devastating.
As I build towards a marketing point I see parallels in this tragic event to what is happening in the auto dealer industry. With deep conviction I feel as though I am recording it as it happens. I see the water rising above dealers’ ankles and I wonder why more of them are not reacting to the danger.
There is no doubt today’s auto dealer is experiencing the business equivalent of Titanic’s grave situation. A jagged berg of competitive pressure and a new, sophisticated customer with much higher expectations have pierced the industry at its weakest links. It is life or death. The parallels between Titanic and the Auto Dealer Industry are chilling; both rely on moving metal for survival.
•Both segregate their customer. Titanic: 1st, 2nd and 3rd class. Auto Dealers: Men and Women. There is a clear distinction in how each are treated.
•Both recklessly race to their destination. Titanic: New York. Auto Dealers: The Sale.
•Both consider themselves ‘Unsinkable’. Titanic by Superior Technology. Auto Dealers by Superior Sales Process. The very strength of which they boast proves to be their weakest link.
•Both dismiss warnings. Titanic: Icebergs. Auto Dealers: Customer Dissatisfaction with the sales or service process.
•Both take dangerous risks. Titanic: Sail Faster. Auto Dealers: Sell more, faster. One risked lives. One risks relationships. Relationships are the lifeblood of existing and repeat business.
•Both struggle to change course. Titanic: ‘Iceberg Dead Ahead’ Auto Dealers: ‘Follow Whatever is Ahead’. Today’s dealers are drowning in a sea of sameness. They cannot resist the influence of their crowd; even as it pulls them deeper.
•Both waste critical opportunities. Titanic: Fill the Life Boats. On Titanic many were launched half-empty. Auto Dealers: Build Customer loyalty. Many Auto Dealers launch half-empty relationships.
•Both experience dramatic collisions. Titanic: The Iceberg. Auto Dealers: Customer Needs, Desires and Expectations.
There is no denying, the auto dealer industry has squarely hit its iceberg. It can be argued it repeats the collision with every negative customer experience.
For the Titanic, slow reflexes contributed to its demise. The same is true for auto dealers; as slow movers grasp false hopes onboard a sinking ship.
•Secure your safety. One of the biggest opportunities in this industry is in serving women. They influence 85% of the purchase decision. Tune into their frequency and offer a sincere experience that is tailored to them. Master this and you will find a safe and rewarding harbor.
•Slow down. Do not collide with your customers…bond. Customer sensitivity is heightened during the car-buying experience. Customers are on the defensive. They are expecting a push. But, a push leads to push-back. End this vicious cycle by moving at the pace they set.
•Get your bearings. The best companies know their customers and strive to evolve their products and services to meet customer needs and desires. Many times companies discover unmet needs which when addressed lead to additional revenue. No business is unsinkable. It must be constantly evolving. Titanic exceeded needs until the needs changed.
•Melt the Ice. Understand that humans are emotional beings. In purchase decisions emotion trumps reason every single time. Unfortunately, most dealers focus on reasoning or misuse emotion. Championing lower prices versus a sincere, respectful buying experience, auto dealers fail to realize customers do not remember prices, they remember how you made them feel. Others use fear and intimidation to force a hand. It is time for those dealers to go down with the ship.
•Follow a truer compass. Get back to the basics of building relationships. Car buyers are looking for someone they can trust. Today, staying on the charts with customer expectations is harder than ever. How do you think the experience you create for your customer compares with their Starbucks experience? Customers are contrasting their best consumer experiences (regardless of product or category) with their experience with you. Do you think you are headed in their direction?
•Take the helm. Unfortunately, fewer and fewer executives are involved with marketing. Noted business management pioneer Peter Drucker once said “there are only two functions that generate customers; Marketing and Innovation. The rest is overhead.” The top needs to be involved and focused on building a sales experience that takes the sell out of the sale.
•Sail under a new flag. It is extremely hard for the consumer to distinguish one dealer from another. The buildings are the same, the products are the same and the gimmicks are the same. Is there any reason to believe the experience is different from dealer to dealer? Differentiation is about communicating and delivering a meaningful difference to your customer. It is finding that one value or niche that strikes a fundamental cord. Differentiation from your competition will prove a major advantage if you are committed to it. There are 100 years of poor car buying experiences associated with this industry. As a dealer you need to distance yourself. You need to become the Un-Car Dealer…and fast.
•Stay together. Building customer loyalty affords great opportunity for those who embrace it. That means staying in touch. Caring after the sale. Growing the relationship post-purchase is investing in your future. Dealers – do you have quarterly ‘Thank You’ events for past customers? Does the GM or others in the management tier regularly call and thank customers? Evaluate your relationship building skills right now – can you name your last 5 customers?
•Abandon pride and ego. Have you noticed that dealer advertising is focused on dealer ego? “We have the largest volume”, “We’re #1”,“We can’t be beat.” Advertising is meant to attract your potential customer, not to pound your own chest. The fact is, the customer does not care about any of these things and they are officially numb to the hype. They are watching and listening for proof points that a car buying experience with you will be positive.
As an auto dealer, the time to scramble for a life boat is now. There are not enough life boats and the most discerning customer to ever shop the planet is choosing who gets a seat.

How To Kill The Music Industry
During The Pirate Bay trial, the music industry placed the blame for the decline in their revenues squarely on the shoulders of file-sharers. Their logic is clearly flawed, but it could sway the verdict if no alternative explanation is presented. So, if piracy isn’t to blame, then what is *actually* killing the music industry?
According to Per Sundin, CEO of Universal Music, the decline in music revenues in the past 8 years can be fully attributed to illegal file sharing. If this were actually true, many of us might even respect his decision to go after pirates as fiercely as the music industry is doing right now. However, the past 8 years have seen a lot more changes in the landscape of home entertainment than Per Sundin would like to admit, and some of those changes have had a massive impact on music profitability – much more so than any amount of piracy.
Let us refresh our memories and take a look at what actually happened during and just before the past 8 years:
1. First, the explosive rise of computer and console gaming. This competitive ‘third element’ has appeared in the entertainment landscape, beaten both music and movies to the curb and taken a huge cut out of the music industry’s revenues. Consumers don’t have infinitely-deep pockets, and billions of ‘recreation dollars’ that used to go almost exclusively to music, are now going into gaming.
2. International trade agreements have allowed consumers to buy their music across borders, rather than accepting local prices on music based on the ‘relative wealth’ of nations, rather than the actual value of the product.
3. New forms of distributable media, most notably MP3s but also CDs, have become mainstream. These new media don’t degrade over time and rarely break at all, making music rebuys a thing of the past, and allowing the second-hand market for music to thrive and expand – both of which take a cut out of the music industry’s former revenues.
4. Radical technological innovation has taken place in the field of music creation, processing, mixing, and mastering. Recording hardware, CD burners, music software, and media encoders have evolved to the point where most artists can actually afford decent-quality equipment to do their own recording and producing. Furthermore, this has fostered literally thousands of smaller, specialized studios that are challenging the ‘Big 4? with lower prices, better terms for artists, genre-specific expertise, etc. Successful artists can now leave the big labels and start their own recording outfits on relatively modest budgets. Naturally, super stars like The Beatles or Frank Sinatra have always had this option, but the recent technological advances have lowered the bar drastically. This development is depriving the ‘Big 4? of many of their former cash cows, who now use the major labels for their advertising and distribution infrastructure alone.
5. The World Wide Web has become an omnipresent force in the world, allowing cheap, end-to-end distribution of digital music, increasingly cutting out the corporate music distributors, who deal in trucks and CD covers, rather than bytes and bandwidth. With iTunes leading the way (very successfully ‘competing with free’, I might add), billions of songs are now purchased digitally rather than physically, no longer necessitating the big labels’ distribution networks.
6. The total number of radio stations, music television networks and other ’streaming’ sources of music has grown exponentially, giving music fans a huge selection of free (and legal) music options. Satellite radio, DAB, and internet radio broadcasts have made it trivial for consumers to simply tune into a channel broadcasting the exact sub-genre of music that they feel like listening to (they can even have a stream created for them dynamically, e.g. on Pandora), making the *purchase* of music entirely optional for the casual listener.
7. A massive selection of entertainment alternatives (home computing, console gaming, mobile devices, etc.) have appeared in the home, effectively marginalizing music as an activity. 15-20 years ago, youths would regularly visit each other just to listen to music together; today, that is virtually unthinkable without some form of activity involved, such as playing Guitar Hero or Rock Band, or dancing at a concert.
8. And finally, the music industry itself has embraced the opportunities of digital media, at last letting consumers buy *single* tracks at a time rather than forcing entire albums full of ‘fillers’ on them. Looking at the RIAA’s own sales figures for the past 10 years, there is a *direct* correlation between the break-off in album sales and the introduction and increase in single track digital sales. Looking at the actual numbers, it is abundantly clear that the vast majority of consumers never wanted to buy full albums in the first place, but were merely forced to by the lack of affordable single-track media. Now that the digital revolution has arrived, countless millions of 16-track album sales are being turned into 1- or 2-track sales, *decimating* the former revenues on music. THIS is the real reason why the music industry is hurting.
In other words: The “it’s common sense” argument that the music industry is peddling in their attempt to tie the declining revenues to piracy, simply doesn’t hold. It is not as clear-cut as the industry believes; the true reason for the decline is something they are still unwilling to face, but will have to face sooner or later:
The fact is that the music industry’s revenues have been artificially inflated for decades because of limited consumer options. The last 15 years of innovation have lifted those limitations, effectively leaving the music industry with an obsolete, defective business model of monopolized production technology, forced album bundling, and almost nonexistent competition in the realm of home entertainment. What is happening now – the decline of music profits and the piracy witch hunt by the music industry – is merely the panicked struggle of a dying business model, a complacent industry’s refusal to accept its diminishing role in a digital world. The pirates are not the reason, and the decline is the not the disease. It is the cure.

Selecting Warehouse Management System for Dynamics GP
WMS software licenses and barcode scanners cost might be comparable or even higher than Microsoft Dynamics GP licenses investment. Considering that fact, you do not really want to make a wrong decision and this is why homework is required in Warehouse Management brand selection. Let’s review typical WMS functionality, how it is mapped to Great Plains Dynamics (this is historical name of Microsoft Dynamics GP, as it is often referred by existing customers) transactions and WMS technical implementations. Warehouse Management System depends on Barcoding technology, and Barcode scanners should be compatible with your final WMS platform, this is why you should not rush into their purchase prior to making final decision on WMS. If you are large wholesaler or distributor, we recommend you to have dedicated project manager, who is responsible for Warehouse Management System selection activity, and who is familiar with barcoding technology (best options would be somebody who got degree in Supply Chain Manager and Logistics):
1. WMS functionality and its mapping to Dynamics GP modules and transactions. In classical scenarios you should expect Sales Order Fulfillment, Inventory Transfer and Adjustments, and Merchandise Replenishment (often referred as restocking). All these functions are available in native Dynamics GP, where Order Fulfillment is Order Line Manual Allocation (SOP transaction entry screen, or the same is possible in Fulfillment Order form). Inventory adjustments (and Cycle counts) have similarly named transaction windows in Great Plains Inventory Control module. And finally Inventory restocking is realized in Purchase Order Processing module in Purchase Receipt document. As you can expect so far, Microsoft Dynamics GP has all the required functionality, but it is not really Barcoding enabled application (as it is rather Corporate ERP, MRP, and Accounting system). This is why you need Warehouse Management application to enable Barcoding originated transactions to be integrated to Great Plains
2. Warehouse Management System realization technologies. If you would like general view, there are two approaches. First one is self-contained external WMS, which has integration modules or even connectors to major Accounting applications, such as Dynamics GP, AX, Oracle Applications, Accpac, Platinum, SAP Business One, Navision, Solomon, etc. And the second approach is Dynamics GP WMS extensions, where Warehouse Management System works directly with Great Plains tables. Here we should warn you that decision making on the External versus Extensions is very difficult and tough. We have only good words to say about both WMS platforms and we would like to give you positive and negative points for each one, not being critical, but giving you highlights to decide on what is the best for you
3. External WMS – as the positive comment, here you typically expect rich functionality, very large number of installations across the USA, Canada and internationally (meaning that most of the software bugs are fixed and you are not the beta testing victim). However there are costs to be universal – you typically have to pay for the same functionality in Warehouse Management Applications (you already paid for Dynamics GP Distribution set of modules: Sales Order Processing, Inventory Control and Purchase Order Processing). We also heard some complains from Great Plains Warehouse oriented customers, that WMS integration is not working out of the box and requires unexpected consulting hours
4. Dynamics GP Warehouse Management System Extensions. As positive comments, integration is not an issue (as it works directly in Great Plains DB scope), you do not have to pay twice for software licenses. However to give you some caution, the installation base is narrower. Here in Alba Spectrum we offer your WMS extensions module and we encourage you to call us for executive and technical presentation
5. Dynamics GP WMS and Great Plains versions. If you have to implement Great Plains Warehouse Management System, our recommendation would be to in the current version (Dynamics GP 2010/11.0) or at least one version behind (Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0)

I think the angle of blades does not produce sufficient lift, why not increase the angle and if it’s not working contact your dealer for the problem..
